A leading comparison sight has revealed that Fuel Off setting helps to reduce motoring costs.

Fuel Off setting is when you shop around for your car insurance in order to reduce your motoring costs. This could help cancel out the increase in petrol prices that has been seen over the last 12 months for the average driver.

The comparison site's figures show that the average petrol car driver is £196 worse off since the increases in the price of fuel. However, the site explained that by looking around to compare car insurance prices, they could save around £222.

Unfortunately, diesel car drivers will have a harder time trying to save money as figures show that the average diesel driver is £233 worse off. In June last year, diesel prices were on a par with petrol prices, around 97p a litre and in less than a year, in May 2008, the average petrol price was £1.12 and the average diesel price was £1.24.

The comparison site has said that by searching an insurance comparison site for your car insurance, you could gain back the money that you've lost as a result of the fuel increases.

The site also advised that, whilst it is possible to save 5p a litre on your petrol each time you fill up, this will not off-set the fuel cost by doing this and it is also a lot more time consuming than spending a few minutes on an insurance comparison site searching for a cheaper quote. By doing this you will also be able to see immediately whether or not your new cover will match your existing cover, because getting cheap motor insurance doesn't have to mean cutting corners.
